Used Cattle Trailers
Anyone that has livestock needs a trailer to haul them around, whether it is across town to the vet or across
country. Many ranchers will opt to buy used cattle trailers as they are less expensive and are usually just as good
as a new one. There are used livestock trailers that will haul all of you livestock from sheep and horses to cattle
and chickens.
There are some things that one should take into consideration when buying used cattle trailers, mainly the size
and style of the trailer. Cattlemen usually transport more than one cow at a time, either to market or to
sell; some even to shows need a trailer that will transport them safely. One must also take into consideration the
total weight of the livestock going into the trailer, what type of roads will they be traveling on, not to mention
the type of vehicle in which you will be using and if you are going to sleep in them.
Once these things have been decided you will need to find used cattle trailers that fit your vehicle,
whether it is a pick up truck, or using a hitch on the end of a car, these are very important to decide which
trailer to use. If you already have a hitch on the vehicle be sure to check it and be sure the used cattle trailer
will fit the ball on the hitch. If you will be adding a hitch be sure and check with the local car shop or truck
equipment retailer and they can put one on for you. Be sure to give them the size of the hitch on the used cattle
trailer you have purchased.
Buying A Quality Used Cattle Trailers
Some used cattle trailers already have the lighting harness but if the one you are buying does
not, be sure to get one that can be added. This is for the safety of the cattle and you. They must work with the
brakes of your vehicle, especially if traveling at night. When buying used cattle trailers from either an
individual or a livestock dealer; ask for the inspection history of the trailer. There are a lot of states now that
require state inspections of the trailer; this insures safety for all concerned. Be sure that it has passed the
inspection or you might run into extra money being spent on getting it fixed to pass inspection.
Many cattle men will buy used semi cattle trailers; these have the cab attached to the trailer itself. These are
for the long haul from state to state and this type of trailer the owner or trainer can actually sleep with the
cattle. The same goes for buying used semi cattle trailers that are for ones used with a pickup. Be sure to check
everything especially the tires. Due to the fact that most trailers are stored outside the tires might be rotted
and need to be replaced before going on the long haul. Even though the outside looks good, they still can be under
inflated and rotted inside.
Gooseneck Used Cattle Trailers
Again many cattlemen like the used gooseneck cattle trailers, ones that have ‘gooseneck’ looking hitch that is
placed inside the back of the pick up truck. This type of used cattle trailers are great for hauling cattle to
livestock shows as you can still use the back of the pick up truck for more storage.
Buying used cattle trailers can be an easy task or a difficult one, depending on how much one knows about
trailers. Ask around to see what the other cattlemen are using, you can even ‘test drive’ some of them, seeing how
they handle.
